Here’s one last EX LIBRIS character design (for now - keeping our Beowulf under wraps for now). This one is of Grendel, our big bad. Our version is a lot werewolfier than any I’ve seen before, which I really dig. While this isn’t an adaptation of Beowulf, and instead uses the characters and tropes of that story to tell a brand new tale, we still wanted the Beowulf characters to look as different from their depictions in the many movie adaptations.
Art by Michael Hamlett.
Mike and I are working on these for Ex Libris, a graphic novel we plan on pitching around in the summer and fall of this year.
Ex Libris is a story about literature. It’s about how fiction bleeds into reality, influencing and shaping human life more than human life shapes it. It’s about Beowulf. It’s a story about the monster who just wanted peace and quiet being thrust into the noisiest, busiest place possible… modern New York.
It’s about monsters and heroes. It’s about a world that no longer has a place for either of those things… for now.
More to come!
I’ll be putting out one of these every day for the next few days. We began with Erin, moved onto Seamus, and finished up the main cast of humans with Professor Peterson. We’ve still got Beowulf, and one of his… alter egos.

Yet another character design from my creator-owned graphic novel, EX LIBRIS. This one is of Professor Peterson, the resident expert on the Middle Ages.

Ex Libris is a story about literature. It’s about how fiction bleeds into reality, influencing and shaping human life more than human life shapes it. It’s about Beowulf. It’s about a professor of literature who meets his fictional idol face to face… and is faced with the crisis of telling this character that he is, in fact, made-up.
